Duke Ellington - Live at the Tivoli Gardens is a movie that everyone can enjoy together.This is something not usually seen in movies of this type, so it makes it an unusual, yet pleasant experience.The movie is absolutely stunning and Duke Ellington deliver some award winning performances in this movie. I also think Cootie Williams was great!

Call him the Duke of Denmark, as this is the second superb Ellington performance recorded in that country to be released in 2003 alone. It's also an appropriate follow-up to The Intimate Duke Ellington; whereas the latter showcases Ellington as a solo pianist and in small group settings, Live at the Tivoli Gardens features the Ellington Orchestra in all its splendor. It includes two approximately 70-minute sets recorded a few days apart in 1971, when the Duke was 72. But although the repertoire ("Take the 'A' Train," "Satin Doll," and a medley of other familiar Ellington compositions, along with some less familiar fare) is similar, the performances are hardly identical--no surprise there, considering the presence of superb improvisers like trumpeter Cootie Williams and saxophonists Paul Gonsalves and the great Ben Webster. The sound quality, while decent, is nowhere near as vivid as on, say, the Keith Jarrett Trio's recent DVD releases, but little matter. When it comes to music of this caliber, we're lucky that it exists at all. --Sam Graham

It's always slightly shocking to see a movie in which the actors look and behave like real people rather than glamorous movie stars--and that's part of the power of Lantana. But its real strength lies in its carefully observed script and the rich, committed performances of its cast. Anthony LaPaglia stars as a cop with an unsteady marriage; when he begins to investigate the disappearance of a noted therapist (Barbara Hershey), he suspects that her marriage to an academic (Geoffrey Rush) was similarly troubled, and he pursues the case as if his own marriage could be redeemed through it. Every character in Lantana is fully developed, sometimes with astonishing conciseness; the coincidences that drive the plot seem as faultlessly organic as the ones that might happen in your own experiences. (Lantana, incidentally, is a kind of plant; no doubt its interlocking foliage mirrors the movie's story.) --Bret Fetzer

I really loved the movie Lantana. I really enjoyed watching Anthony LaPaglia in this movie. I also think Rachael Blake was great!
